Why Don’t State Governments Facing Economic Problems Legalize Recreational Drugs And Tax Them?

Filed in Category Recreational Drug Use

Recreational drugs that are currently legal, such as alcohol and tobacco generate a lot of tax revenue. Is it still just a case of the people making the most profit off of illegal drugs want to keep the prices high and are the same ones making the laws?

This is because the drugs are still illegal on the national level, also without enforcing these laws, the states will loose highway funding from the Federal Government,
And the number on thing about governments is that they can control criminals. When they catch all the criminals they need to make more. How much money do you think they make from civil forfeiture laws and fines for drug use and possession? They end up on the top side of things.
Governments prefer to control behavior over anything else, they can always raise taxes on income and sales to raise revenue.

Here’s what they should do: they should make recreational drugs legal, and anyone that wants to sell above a certain amount has to get a license. The money from the license goes towards taxes, and the person selling claims the money they get on their taxes at the end of the year. Anyone selling an amount small amount can do so, but if they are caught holding a large amount without a license, they get a ticket and pay a fine. It’s not hard for them to get money from this, they just don’t think. As it is, marijuana was actually legal in the U.S. and prescribable by a doctor until like the 1920s. People need to use their brains and research these things instead of believing “everybody”. Everybody usually tends to be wrong.

because, if they did, then EVERYONE would be an addict.
The police/ gov’t get alot of money by busting arms dealers/drug dealers and it gives them something to do.
Look how long it took before anyone knew about marijuana, and how it helps glaucoma/eye problems. Ant it’s been around for centuries.
Ok, coke, was used in the 1800’s as an appetite suppressant, and to calm the nerves. (Gee, all addicts need the drug they are addicted to! duh! lol)
The Gov’t will never legalize any of the drugs, because they have more fun busting the criminals that make them/sell them/ use them/ buy them. And they make more money doing it.

Because then those individual states would lose a lot of money in federal funding. A lot of federal funds are tied to these issues, such as maintaining the drinking age at 21 (it is up to each individual state–however it is also tied to transportation funding, so all adhere to it).
There is also a stigma attached to it. Even the most liberal or libertarian of states have large conservative constituencies that would not accept it. Those politicians would not be re-elected due to the stigma attached to their name.
It’s unfortunate, but I feel this country is often stuck in a time warp.

Great idea. And with the amount of people on welfare going up the country will be AWESOME!
