Filed in Category Teenage Drug Use
I’m writing a new story and I want one of the characters to have a problem similar to drug use. My first thought was alcohol, but I want it to be something that would keep the character away from home. (For example, a teenage boy using drugs would be out more in attempt to hide it from his parents). I also want the problem to have a financial impact (eg. drugs are expensive) but I don’t want to use a drug addiction. What else could I use?

~~~Scooby-Doo~~~
He could have an eating disorder, but the kind of Bulimia where the binge cycle involves exercising like crazy all the time. That would keep him out of the house all the time…
buying things on the home shopping network. he/she has to leave the house to order the items from a friends house, because his/her parents or spouse won’t allow it. the person doesn’t really need or sometimes even want the items, but he/she likes getting things in the mail.
Sex addiction. Prostitutes and such. Don’t laugh, don’t get offended. It’s a real thing. Now you know.
Any addiction would work because at the root of it all, addiction is the same. Gambling would keep a teenage boy away from home and have a financial impact.
