Anything that makes your mind work differently to normal, either speed it up, slow it down, make you feel happy for no reason, etc.
The main ones used in our society are alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, marijuana, opium, heroin, amphetamines, cocaine, and many others.
They are all substances that can lead to harm or addiction, some are legal some are not-that is no reflection of how harmful they are.
Some people can use them with no apparent harm to themselves or society, but many can't and they can destroy lives.
You'll only understand what they do if you try them, not that I suggest that you do.
For instance, cocaine: if you use that it makes you feel like you could do just about anything, and it does actually help for a lot of mental tasks, BUT after you have taken it a few times it no longer works as well, and you have to take more and more to get an effect, and then just to feel normal-if you don't take it you feel low.
The bottom line is that by yourself, with no drugs at all, you can get all the various feelings that recreational drugs give you-like the "high" after strenuous exercise is more or less the same as a heroin high, except it's been earned, and is harmless.
As you even asked the question, it's likely you're going to try for yourself, one thing for sure is that they don't solve any problems, and are more likely to cause them.
