Is There The Possibility Of Genetic Alteration Through The Use Of Recreational Drugs?

Filed in Category Recreational Drug Use

As far as I’m aware, there is no possibility of recreational drug usage affecting the user’s DNA.
However, is it conceivable that such use could affect one’s genes, either adversely or otherwise?
By recreational drugs I mean restricted drugs such as ketamine, ecstasy, cocaine, LSD etc.

    I doubt it.
EDIT: The guy below me sounds like he is on drugs!!! One of the links is related to AIDS. Another is something that a Rabbi wrote (hardly an expert!!!). And the last one talks about cardiac arrest. Drugs do cause often irreversible damage to your mind and body but not GENETIC damage. I doubt the guy below me understands what genetic damage is. Sheesh…..and I’M the druggie, right???

Recreation drug usage can absolutely damage DNA. Though many of the drugs themselves (the actual chemical that is being sought after for the high) may not cause damage to DNA, the other impurities in the pill/powder due to manufacturing can indeed cause DNA damage or effect the synthesis of DNA. There are many carcinogens in street drugs.
And to clarify…your DNA is your genes.
