Hate to suggest bad news, but the likelihood of a 3 yr heroin addict getting off and staying off for good the chances are less than 3 %. Some heroin addicts are functional for long periods, if it is not a real demanding job. NO not all heroin addicts are down and out junkies. Interesting you say you think she has been clean 2 wks which indicate to me you still don’t believe this person. Lets say you have her stay with you a couple days if she is not using she should be fine, very sociable and not off to herself,,If she uses she will seem spacey, maybe even nod off, the thing that I am curious about I would ask her IF she has been clean when did she go through withdrawal and for how long and how helped her. If she is not being honest with you-stay away. If you are with her and she is caught with drugs or “works” you go to jail too. The way I would help is get her to a DR in your area that uses Suboxone and a 12 Step System. Without that she will likely go back. Any further questions, read my profile and email me God Bless ReggieR

I hate to say this, but once a heroin user “stops” their habits, it’s all an uphill battle from there. From what I’ve seen/heard, her mind will always be scanning the thought of heroin followed by a possible relapse. Sadly, that’s how strong the drug is and I’m sorry to hear she was on it for 3 years. It will take a lot of mental toughness and will power to overcome, but it CAN be done. My advice is to help her as much as you can. She needs someone who she can count on.

there is nothing wrong with heroin or any drug for that matter. it is what it is. its just a drug, abusing heroin is bad, and in the event that someone was abusing (not using) heroin, then no they wouldn’t be able to hold down a job. the fact that your friend has held down a job and been on heroin for 3 years is remarkable! she deserves a medal! if she doesn’t want to use anymore, be supportive. heroin is a dangerous thing, and it shouldn’t be used at all, because of all the risk. so i don’t condone it, there are no signs of it really, just look for track marks in her arm, if she becomes a junkie, you will know.
