The Netherlands is well known to have liberal drug laws regarding the use of marijuana in comparison to a lot of other countries. I was wondering how this affects that actual level of drug use in the country?
Is the level of drug use, and drug related crimes any higher in The Netherlands than it is in another other Western European nations, for example, the UK?
Thanks

No, in fact it is lower than in the countries around us.
Follow the link in the other answers for facts, but in general, there are less users of marijuana and even more of influence on the crime numbers, far less users of the addictive drugs.
I am not for drugs use, but I am for the factual anti drugs policy as in use in the Netherlands.
Most of the Dutch seem to think the same way.
There are many addicted foreigners in Amsterdam, with all the problems they give, but few addicted Dutch. The Dutch population of addicted people is getting older, not being replaced with young people but there is an instream of addicts from other countries.
After spending time there I thought it was high. In fact its lower than most its just not hidden away that goes to the treatment centers for addiction. Thus giving the appearance its seems everywhere in each city
it’s lower and drug related crime is also lower.
if it was not for the tourist trade flocking to amsterdam and other big town just for that, it would also be less in your face!
The percentage of recent cannabisusers in the EU is the lowest in Finland (3%), Portugal(3%) and Sweden (1%) and the highest in England and Wales (11%). In the Netherlands there are 6% recent cannabisusers. A bit higher than Norway (5%), but lower than France (8%) and Spain (10%)
In recent years the policy became less liberal. This has as far as I know not much impact on the use (the use has risen!), but has more an impact on the relation with other countries.
England is far less liberal but has far more cannabis users. The same goes for tyhe US (11%) and Australia (13%)
