I have a loved one who has taken hydrocodone and xanax for several years. He has decided to try to stop taking the medication. He is going cold turkey? Is there anything he can take to reduce the withdrawl symptoms? How dangerous is this?

If he is going to taper off the xanax but stop the hydrocodone then you should have some Imodium available because he is going to have some severe abdominal problems for a few days. You should also have some ibuprofen or something to help muscle spasms in his legs. He will have these too. He will also feel like he has the flu so he may just want to take next week off work. It will be a horrible experience for the next few weeks but in the long run it will be so worth it; I wish you all the best of luck. God Bless.
Should do it by a doctor, detox experienced doctor. It is several years it’s not a month or two.
Hydrocodone and Xanax: I hardly came out of them 6 years ago after using them for a year. I tapered it for a month even though I suffered severe withdrawals.
It is very dangerous doing it cold turkey. The danger is not from Hydrocodone but from Xanax because might cause convulsions, especialy if he just stopped without tapering it.
If luckily he comes out he will experience the acute withdrawals for about 2 weeks, sometimes more. I strongly suggest that h would see a doctor-detox solution rather than the torture and the dangers of doing so.
Good Luck
I am a oxycodone user who is now 14 days clean. My advice for your friend is to rush to the nearest detox center (many wil l let him still work). I tried cold turkey and it almost killed me. I had horrible, horrible muscle spasms and hallucenations. Just a warning though, these clinics will not take you after 5-7 days out cold turkey. They will request that you go to a pain management doctor.. Hope this helps….
Withdrawl symptoms are just that. He shouldn’t take anything else to ease it. He could become hooked on that. And cutting cold turkey is very difficult. He’s just going to have to suffer through it. Try and have him sleep as much as possible if he doesn’t want to go to a rehab.
Due to health risks that can happen from doing it “cold turkey” he needs to do this under advice/care of a doctor. Don’t let him try by himself.
your loved one should go to the doctor or a rehab.
