Going off the pill and use Paraguard?

Filed in Category Symptoms of Pill Use

I’m 23 years old. I’ve been on the pill since I was 15. I went on for ovarian cysts, and have been on ever since. I like knowing when I’m going to get my period and how light it is. However, I’ve been on the pill for so long that I worry about having children one day. I’m in a serious relationship so I still need a form of birth control since I’m not ready to have children yet.
I worry about using hormonal birth control for so long, so I’ve been thinking about an IUD. I know that I need to talk to my doctor, however, I was wondering what other people’s experiences with this were. I never gained weight going on the pill, but I have gotten myself to a very comfortable weight for myself, and I’m afraid of gaining weight going off of the pill. I’m also afraid of having mood swings or any other symptoms from going off of the pill.
Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated! Thanks. :-)

If anything, you’d probably lose weight going off of the pill. Mood swings are going to be a risk, but it’s temporary, and all a part of returning your body to it’s natural hormonal patterns. I have a non-hormonal IUD, and I’m quite thrilled with the thing. My period was only heavier and more painful for 2 days of my first period with it, and only 4 1/2 days long. No random spotting and no hormonally-associated side-effects. This site may be of interest to you:
