I believe you may be talking about Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. This is a disorder that affects the structure of connective tissue (collagen) in the body. It can range from very mild cases in which a person has no other symptoms than being very flexible, to very severe cases which limit a person’s ability to participate in daily activities. A good website to check for more information is the Ehlers-Danlos Foundation of New Zealand (http://www.edfnz.org.nz/information.htm) – it struck me as straightforward and informative. You can also check the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehlers-Danlos_syndrome), though you should be careful to read the references as well as the wiki to make sure what it says is accurate.
If you are worried about how this could impact your life, I would recommend talking to your doctor. Be sure to point out that there is a history of Ehlers-Danlos in your family and ask what this means for you, given your particular characteristics. Good luck, and try not to dislocate anything.
