I need to know if there is a way to prove with a drug test if someone is simply using their prescription for pain killers, or is “doctor shopping” and taking more than they should… Any ideas? I have a friend that may be abusing prescription pain killers and I need a way to find out for sure! Please help

Not by a drug test, test will only show whether someone is taking or has taken a certain drug in a period of time. Depending what it is, if they were to measure the concentration of the drug in her system, that may indicate she is taking more, as it might be higher than expected after a period of time, when the level should have dropped. But that can be explained in other ways and general drug tests don’t go into such detail.
Look for packs, labels and scripts with dates on them, should give you an idea how many she is going through from when she is getting it dispensed. depends how secretive she is about it I guess. Do you know what she is taking?
The fact that it has occurred to you to wonder such a thing suggests that you are probably right. Obviously something in her behaviour is making you wonder. I understand though you want to know for sure.
I am guessing that just your questioning their use means they likely are over using or have had problens in the past. Drug tests vary. The cheaper they are, the less they tell. Many just tell whether a substance is in someone’s sysytem or not, but some more expensive tests or blood tests through a medical facility can do tests that show the levels of various drugs in one’s system. That is the best way to prove if someone is using the appropriate amount, however; with time the amount of a drug in the system does dissipate.
I don’t know how you can find out about a friend’s drug use. They’d have to be willing to undergo the tests and the costs.
If you suspect drug abuse, I’d go to your local Narcotics Anonymous center and give your friend some pamphlets and a meeting list and leave it at that. It is up to them whether to stop drugs or not, Basically, the disease is self-diagnosed and its up to them to get help or not. Good Luck
It’s hard to tell. A urine test might be the way to go. Are they displaying classic symptoms of drug addiction? If they start to show those signs drug detox is a great place to start.
What leads you to believe that they are abusing their prescription?
