No I doubt marijuana in itself would cause that. Marijuana is a depressant if anything. However this drug is commonly mixed with other ones that might cause some crazy effects.
If it was cut with something speed based like meth. Otherwise, no. If anything, weed would be used to take the edge off of a manic episode (and I mean just an edge).
No, unless it was laced with something. Mental illness just happens – the first episode has to be sometime.
No it just happened at the same time – actually a bipolar episode may have triggered the marijuana smoking. For many people who self medicate against bipolar or mental episodes – marijuana is the drug of choice.
This is because marijuana does make some people feel better initally. For some it actually makes them feel “normal’. I know a few people like that.
No. You are not a psychiatrist. Don’t diagnose your brother with bipolar because he smokes weed. That is so irresponsible and ridiculous.
You are obviously concerned about your brother and want the best for him. Many people don’t have family like that, so this is a really good thing.
I just watched a documentary that discussed new research being done on weed causing or increasing the likely hood of mental breaks. Psychosis and bi polar issues were cited in the program as being brought on by cannabis. Some professionals feel that it can either enhance a vulnerability that the person already has or directly cause the problem. Either way it isn’t something you want to ignore given your brother’s symptoms.

My dad has bipolar disorder and he has been going manic a lot more often in the past couple years. It turns out that he had been smoking marijuana beforehand. He hasn’t smoked it since and he has been fine so it could be possible that the marijuana played a part in your brothers symptoms.
