Can a person be diagnosed with Diabetes from the use of heroin specifically?

Filed in Category Symptoms of Heroin Use

A person whom I know uses Heroin/opiates and was sick, but now a short time later is experiencing other symptoms that of what I know is hypoglycemic/diabetes is it possible to contract it from just using heroin or other opiates.

The use of opiates causes a person to not eat or be at all hungry. This could cause hypoglycemic effects in sensitive people.

Opiates affect nerves and so does too much carb or too little carb. Working together it stands to reason that opiates would encourage the development of diabetes.

I really have no clue! I do know a person on opiates is in danger of very severe health problems if they didn’t have them before.

There are many drugs, including illegal drugs like heroin, that can actually lead to diabetes , because the drugs damaged the pancreas.. Among the many of these drugs are common ones like some blood pressure medications, cancer curing drugs, drugs for arthritis, and a large array of drugs that are used to treat many kinds of disease and illnesses. There are also other diseases that can lead to the development of diabetes, like hemmochromotosis (high iron level). And there are many toxic chemicals that can also be linked to the development of diabetes just by being exposed to them for certain periods of time. Yes, heroin can definately be linked to diabetes.

The use of opiates destroys more than just the brain. Every organ in the body is affected — including the pancreas, which is responsible for producing insulin.

He didn’t “contract” the disease, because diabetes isn’t “contractible”, at least not in the sense of something like Hepatitis or AIDS. The use of heroin has damaged his internal organs — the pancreas, at least, and probably the liver, kidneys, and heart.

It sounds as if your friend is at “the beginning of the end”, and if the heroin doesn’t get him the organ damage will.

Opiates do not cause diabetes. But drug addicts aren’t healthy people, and generally don’t live healthy life styles and an unhealthy life style could certainly result in diabetes among other things. His ill health may be diabetes or something else. If he is sharing needles he may have contracted hepatitis or even HIV. Without a glucometer, it’s not really possible to know if he really was suffering from hypoglycemia. If he has undiagnosed diabetes, one would suspect high blood sugar not low. The bottom line is that his drug use is causing organ damage.
