Becoming A Member Of The United States Military While Using Recreational Drugs?

Filed in Category Recreational Drug Use

My counsin is interested in joining the United States Army, yet he currently is using recreational drugs (marijuana). Is it a policy that the United States will not hire new members of the army who are using marijuana? And if so, is there any way of becoming a member of the army if you stop using marjuana?

he will NOT be enlisting. ever.
more than ten times over the course of a lifetime is a permanent Disqualification for militray service, and no waivers will ever be authorized. Once or twice is experiential, and as long as he has been off it 12 months, he might have a chance. current use won’t even get a recruiter to give him the time of day.
Drug testing is random throughout one’s career, and he will be tested before he ships at MEPS and then again when he arrives at basic training.
    Zero Tolerance means exactly that.

No he cannot join the military if he is using drugs- He joins and gets caught using drugs he is discharged because they have a zero tolerance for drugs. The policy I think for he ervices if you can get a waiver and join if you were and experimental user-used it to see what it was like but not on a regular basis which is what he does. Used to be a set number of time but I can’t remember the exact number but it less then five and I am thinking it was three.

if he’s really serious about enlisting, then tell him to stop IMMEDIATLEY, and he’s going to have to be clean for awhile before he can even go and enlist anyway. He has a choice to make, which one is more important to him. they do not mix, drugs are a huge NO in the military, they have no place to be there! He should stop anyway if for no other reason than it’s an illegal drug and could get in serious trouble. but, you have to be able to pass a drug test to get into the military and sometimes they will do random drug testing as well. and if you’re caught with in while you’re in the military, its much worse than being caught with it as a cavilian, and these are some of the things he needs to think about.

Yes.& Yes. The military will not enlist you if you test positive for any drugs. But you can still enlist if you stop.
    Steps for enlistment:
    1.10 references
2.ASVAB ( like the SAT exam)
    3. run background check
    4. OVERNIGHT MEDICAL EXAM.this is where your problem is. they test you for EVERYTHING!!! they take you to a hotel at like 4pm and you stay overnight. Then in the morning they take you to your medical exam. The do that so you can’t take anything that would conflict with the test. So if you have something to get rid of start now!!
    5.MEPS
    6. BOOT CAMP

Well you call it a recreational drug, that’s just unofficial slang, it is illegal. You cannot join the military and keep smoking marijuana. A person would have to quit because they do random drug tests and anyone would eventually be caught. So, to answer your question, yes you can join if you quit and keep your mouth shut about doing it.

CURRENT use of marijuana is unacceptable. Period. And the active in marijuana (THC) is fat soluble so it takes months to clean out of your system.
But there is a waiver for everything except pregnancy and HIV. Even a felony conviction won’t necessarily keep him out, see:http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/07/13/a…
So tell him to clean up, start physical conditioning, BE ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE he can pass a drug screen, and understand the Army is a big step in life. Screw that up in any way shape or form and no place is going to want him.
And don’t lie about anything at all during the induction process. The US gov’t finds out about everything, especially when it is important like hiring. If you don’t think “misrepresentations” won’t be found out … they will be.
The flip side is that the gov’t understands that most folks are not squeaky clean. Even the current commander-in-chief has a DUI on his record. Really.

They do drug tests and then random drug tests. If he wants to never be able to get a job aafter he is thrown out and jailed for smoking pot, then he should definately join.
If he stops (and really stops) then I suppose he could lie about having ever used it, then as long as he passes drug tests it shouldnt be an issue.

He’ll have to be clean for awhile before trying to pass the medical portion. Otherwise he’ll be flagged from enlisting in anything, and if he ever gets caught (the Army drug-tests quite often) he’ll probably get discharged, and not the good kind.

I don’t want him in the army! If he stops, what is the guarantee that he will stay off? I don’t need my, or my husbands lives in the hands of a “pot head.” Does he plan on lying about having used drugs?

Drug tests will weed (yes, I meant to say this) this loser out.
You can’t join the US military with drugs in your system, they check before they process you through MEPS

I don’t want him fighting for my US.If he is that interested in the Military he needs to stop marijuana or just stay in his own selfish little world.
