There’s a contest being held for the best ameteur writing. The subject is medical mystery (ala “House.”) In fact, we’re being encouraged to use the charachters and settings from House if we choose.
I want to try my hand. I’m thinking a story revolving around an Amish girl around 9 years old who begins exhibiting symptoms very much like that of a person high on LSD. BUT the kicker is, she is halucinating that Satan or the Devil is tormenting her.. The Salem Witch Trials will be referred to heavily. The final diagnosis will be ergot poisioning (one of the things that people say could have been causing all the weirdness in Salem 1692).. ERgot poisioning is from a particular mold that can grow on Rye in the wrong kind of weather. I have a few questions I could use some help witih, esp from people who know alot about Amish.

I lived right across the road from them for a few years. They are allowed to accept medical treatment. Now they will usually try home care and remedies first, but they are not prevented from it.
They DO NOT carry medical insurance and cost is often a big issue. They don’t believe in any type of insurance, at least the clan I lived right in the middle of. They considered it gambling.
Added: I didn’t see the rest of that.
I never knew them to fast. Now different clans do have different traditions so some might. They are also really pretty to themselves, so I may not have known in spite of talking to the two boys at least weekly. The father didn’t like outsiders at all and would avoid you unless it was business.
They were often superstitious, but they weren’t in for a lot of really crazy stuff but I heard talk of evil spirits at least once. I think they would react in a pretty rational way and take the child to a doctor. The ones I knew had a mid-wife who was a nurse and just somehow got in with them that did a lot of that kind of thing as a first line, but she was very willing to get help as she wasn’t one of them and they usually took her advice.
Ironically, “House” just did an ergot poisoning episode this week, with the patient thinking she was seeing dead people….so you might be accused of plagiarizing the episode.
To my knowledge, the Amish have no rules about medical treatment. When the Amish schoolhouse was shot up, there was no objection to sending the survivors to the hospital. Some hospitals in Amish areas have special programs for the Amish, since they do not believe in health insurance and generally cannot afford hospital bills.
They used that plot on the Love Boat once – with taco shells contaminated with ergot fungus. If Dr. Adam Bricker could figure it out, Dr. House would spot it in an instant.
As for the Amish – there are lots of different sects and they have different rules about medical treatment. I worked in a hosptial in Western PA and I would often see Amish families there. One thing I’ll tell you is it seemed like the whole family came with the patient. The men wore blue shirts and black pants and had beards. The woman wore dark blue dresses and bonets on their heads.
my grandpa was amish…
it depends on the sect that it happens in…
some would isolate her, pray over her, lay hands on her
anoint her with oil, whip her, scald her if they thought she
was possessd…
some can deny medical help…others do not…believe it
or not some were even like the old time snake oil men
and sold “sugar pills” for different ailments..
as to only her getting the rye mold..not likely…but different
people could have different reactions some could just get
sick..puke.diahrea…she got the hallucigen effect…
another note…
depending on the sect….some believe your born evil and
can only be saved after you reach adulthood…so your
“possessed” with an evil spirit from the get go…
They accept medical treatment.
They would probably act like any other parents
She could have gotten spoiled rye from animal silage she wasn’t supposed to eat
I think the doctors would catch ergot poisoning right away.
The Amish in general do not see doctors. Some communities are more open to it while others absolutely disallow it.
The community would shun her heavily and probably expel her family so as not to catch whatever she has.
She could have an outside friend who gives her old food because their community is poor.
